Educational Programs

2016 / 2017 – Celebrating our 43rd Season! Engage, enrich and inspire!

P/Arts brings high quality, accessible and affordable professional performing arts to northeast CT. Our flagship programs (that are free to area schoolchildren of participating schools) are our Children’s Educational Opera, our Children’s Educational Symphony, and our Kindergarten “Science of Sound” programs.

  •  Science of Sound: When Is It Music? is a 45-minute in-class workshop which will examine the nature and creation of sound through hands-on activities, observation and creative exploration, and song. Led by educator and professional musician Sally Rogers, this program is intended to supplement your music curriculum by encouraging your youngest students to engage in inquiry- based learning and guided critical thinking to explore principles of sound and how music is created.

Through our artistic partners, Salt Marsh Opera Company and the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, local schoolchildren are introduced to the creative artistry, beauty and storyline in productions of the opera and orchestra.

  • The students learn about the art form, the narrative and the music through a multi-media
    study guide provided to teachers.
  • Each participating class is visited by the artists for an in-school workshop prior to the performances.
  • In the spring, the children attend live, fully-staged productions of the opera or the symphony at
    the Hyde Cultural Center.

  • New Haven Symphony Orchestra performance date, Wednesday, March 29, 2017. Shows at10:15 a.m. and noon. Introduce your students to the New Haven Symphony Orchestra! This educational program features music highlighting each of the orchestra’s sections individually including brass, woodwind, string and percussion. Awe-inspiring sounds of the full orchestra featuring composers Copeland, Bridge, Janacek and Ives are sure to delight young audiences.  Make an NHSO reservation.
  • Salt Marsh Opera Company’s production of Gianni Schicchi on Thursday, May4, 2017. Two performances, 10:00AM and 12:00PM. Puccini  has written a masterful, very funny one act Opera about an old aristocrat who has died bereft of love and friends. His will is rumored to leave the estate to a monastery and so begins the family intrigue. Gianni Schicchi is enlisted in the hilarious plot and crazy machinations to “rescue” the fortune. Great ending!
